NEW DELHI – After Tejasvi Yadav and Chirag Paswan, new political dynasts have emerged in Bihar. The Congress Party, which along with Left is part of RJD-led Grand Alliance, has fielded son of Shatrughan Sinha from Patna’s Bankipur seat and daughter of Sharad Yadav from Bihariganj in Madhepura district.

Luv Sinha has been pitted against the sitting BJP MLA, Nitin Navin in Bankipur Assembly seat which is considered a BJP stronghold. Incidentally, the sitting MLA is also a political dynast, being son of Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha who represented the constituency until his death in 2006. Both Luv and Nitin come from Kayastha caste, which has a substantial population in the constituency.

Luv’s father, film-star and former Union minister, Shatrughan Sinha, has been a member of Lok Sabha from Patna Sahib Constituency for two terms. Bankipur is part of this parliamentary constituency. Although Sinha, who contested the 2019 election on Congress ticket and lost to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, he has a certain amount of clout even in the BJP. Luv, though a new-comer to politics, is likely to give a tough fight to the sitting MLA.

Subhashini Raj Rao is another rising star who the Congress has fielded from Bihariganj in Madhepura district. She is the daughter of Sharad Yadav who has represented Madhepura in the Lok Sabha for several terms. Sharad, who is originally from Madhya Pradesh, entered politics as a young leader of JP Movement way back in 1974. He has floated Loktantrik Janata Dal after parting ways with Janata Dal United following Nitish Kumar’s decision to go back to BJP-led NDA alliance.

It is interesting to note that both, Shatrughan Sinha as well as Sharad Yadav, have built their political career on anti-Congressism.

The Congress is contesting on 70 seats in alliance with RJD and Left parties. On October 15, the party released the second list of 46 candidates. Besides Luv and Subhashini, the list includes Rakesh Singh, the nephew of former governor, Nikhil Kumar, and Mithilesh Chaudhary, the brother-in-law of former cricketer Kirti Azad.
