NEW DELHI — In an interview to Hindustan Times, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal on Thursday said that a silent majority of students wanted to sit for NEET and JEE examinations.

In no time, students, parents and activists took to social media with the hashtag calling PM Narendra Modi ‘anti-student’. Many wanted to know where that ‘majority’ is and why is it ‘silent’.

National President of Youth Congress Srinivas B V tweeted on his official Twitter handle, “Mr. Pokhriyal: Who are these students belonging to the silent majority and where are they found? Because be it on social media or the roads of the country, the youth is raising its voice loud and clear & standing firmly against this government. #AntiStudentNarendraModi”.

The Minister expressed his dismay over the discussion of the matter of postponement of examination in the corridors of politics. During the interview, he said that politicisation of education pained him and urged people of the political spectrum to abide by the orders of the honourable Supreme Court.

As reported by Hindustan Times, expressing concern over the possible loss of an academic year, Pokhriyal claimed that “this government is very empathetic and considerate to the cause of the students.”

On the contrary, students and parents seem to be more concerned about the health of the students and their family members. Tagging the Minister, an aspirant condemned the decision of conducting the examinations and said that he could risk his life for once but he could not put his family in danger. Life, he said, was more important than career. “I can give this exam later. Therefore, I decided not to appear in the NEET Exam”, reads the tweet.

The Minister has claimed that Only 332 candidates have requested for change of their centre cities, which are being considered positively. The National Student Union India, keeping the identity intact, tweeted the screenshot of an aspirant regarding the distance between her home and the test centre and other concerns. The comments read, “Let me tell you my scenario, I am asthmatic, tried wearing a mask for 3 hours but failed. My 1st choice of centre is 80 km far away from my home. …. My father is diabetic, too. Unki health jyada important hai mere liye. ….(His health is more important for me)”

#AntiStudentNarendraModi NTA claimed that 99.99% students get their centre from their first choice but in actual case they literally exchange their own city centre with another!! #Rise_AgainstExamsInCovid #AntiStudentNarendraModi #PostponeNEETJEE_Today https://t.co/xvXPCm0acn

A Twitter user, claiming to be a parent, has challenged the Union Education Minister to run a poll regarding the prevailing discourse. Bhagya Laxmi tweeted, “I as a parent want to challenge you sir @DrRPNishank. Run a poll in the official NTA website regarding JEE & NEET, then you have to follow what the majority says. BTW I’ll give you 10,000 /- you can buy new spectacles because your specs are blurred by Mafias.  #AntiStudentNarendraModi”

At a time when cases of covid-19 infection are relentlessly rising up, netizens questioned the conduct of the policy-makers. At the initial stage, the policy of lockdown and physical distancing was at its peak and now, the authorities are being lenient towards the disease.

“Why do you want to play with their lives?” asks a medical aspirant, tagging PM Narendra Modi.

The pandemic-induced lockdown had the worst effect on the deprived people of society. The circumstances will be affecting the community during examination, too. Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Akshay Marathe tweeted, “#NEET and #JEE are exams that give poor students a way out of their poverty. This year, only the privileged few will be able to take the exams comfortably, while lakhs of poor students will be sacrificed by the BJP’s arrogance. #AntiStudentNarendraModi”.

A netizen simply put every institution carrying its proceeding virtually under the garb of questions. He said, “Courts are holding virtual hearings. The Modi govt is functioning virtually. Election Commission of India is holding Virtual Rallies. But students should go & give exams physically in covid ??? #Rise_AgainstExamsInCovid #AntiStudentNarendraModi #PostponeJEE_NEETinCOVID”.

PM Modi and his new photo album with peacocks have also received backlashes. Netizens contrive for the attention of the Prime Minister. Youth Congress of Uttrakhand tweeted, “75,760 new covid cases in 24 hours. 1,023 deaths in 24 hours. Yet the government forces students to sit for exams. What did India do to deserve a PM who shows more attention to a peacock than a nation facing the worst health crisis? #AntiStudentsModiGovt #NEETJEE #AntiStudentNarendraModi”.

Deepak Mishra, National General Secretary Of Indian Youth Congress, In-charge – West Bengal & Arunachal Pradesh tweeted, “The country is fighting against Corona, The students are fighting for the safety of their lives and Modi ji is doing photography, take some time to listen to the voice of the students too modi ji #AntiStudentNarendraModi”.
