NEW DELHI – A Muslim man, on Monday, died during the police interrogation in the Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district after being rounded up by the police while returning home after attending a ijtema (religious congregation) in Bhopal.

30-year-old Izrael Khan was intercepted at Kushmoda Police Chouki when he was heading to his home in the Gokul Singh area of the city in an auto. He was interrogated by the police personnel. According to the reports, the police were asking Khan to give out certain information.

When Izrael fell unconscious during the interrogation he was taken to the district hospital. The doctors at the hospital declared him dead. Family members of the deceased, along with other people, protested at the district hospital over the death. They also held demonstrations at the highway with the dead body demanding action against the erring police officials.

Later, a judicial inquiry was ordered and an FIR was registered at the Cantt. police station. Four policemen were summoned by a senior police official.

Talking to local media, the family members alleged that the police had beaten him up during the interrogation at the police station.

“We don’t have any criminal record. My son doesn’t have a criminal record. My son-in-law doesn’t have any criminal record,” said Munawwar Khan, father of Izrael.

The policemen had asked for Rs 1 Lakh from them, but they could afford only Rs 30,000.

“We had arranged the remaining 70,000. But Izrael was killed before we could reach the money,” said a family member.

However, the police have denied that the deceased was beaten up at the police station. According to the police, when Izrael was stopped and taken for the interrogation, he had a headache and was taken to the hospital where he died.
