NEW DELHI – A bearded Muslim man was harassed, abused and forced to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on Sunday morning when he was going to bring fodder for his animals in Dhrampur village of Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district.
In a complaint filed with the Farah police station, the victim, Mubeen, said his tormentors called him “katua” (a derogatory word used for Muslims) and blamed his community for killing Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal.
“Some people, who were sitting at Dhrampur Bridge, waylaid the victim and started manhandling and abusing him. They forced him to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. The victim, who was shivering in fear, had no option but to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’,” reads the complaint.
Then, the culprits tugged on his beard, called him “Katua” and “traitor” and blamed him for the killing of Kanhaiya Lal. All the while, the man kept pleading to let him go, but they continued torturing him.
They said, “You circumcised people will be cleansed of the country. You will not be allowed to live in this country.”

After the incident, the victim was so traumatized that he closeted himself in a room and did not come out. When his family members asked him for the reason, he broke down and narrated the entire incident. After hearing about the incident, his family and villagers went into distress fearing for their future as they are a minority in the village where 95% of the population is Hindu.
Initially, his family decided not to file register any complaint against the incident as it could create communal discord in the village. However, when the video went viral on social media they decided to report the matter to the police.
According to Hindi daily, Dainik Jagran, the local police have filed an FIR on the basis of Mubeen’s complaint and arrested an accused and searched for other accused.
The 15-second video of the incident which has gone viral shows a man forcing the bearded man to say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. The victim recited ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ three times. There are three people, including a minor, standing by.
