NEW DELHI — The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Thursday has moved Adjournment Motion Notice in the Lok Sabha against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on Uniform Civil Code. Muslim League MP P K Kunhalikutty took strong objection to the PM’s remarks saying it amounts to ‘direct intrusion’ in the personal laws of religious minorities.

In his reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the PM said the previous Congress/UPA governments had failed in bringing legislation on UCC.

During his speech, Prime Minister castigated the Congress on  UCC and Triple Talaq issues.

“In the 50s, the Congress had the option to introduce legislation on ‘Uniform Civil Code but they didn’t. They had another opportunity in the form of the Shah Bano case. It was a classic case of gender equality but they frittered away that opportunity,” Modi said and adding that the Congress had another opportunity 35 years later, i.e. in the current session.

Modi even went on saying that “There is no need to look at it from any community particular’s point of view.”  True to his words, the government led by him, once again did not consult the stakeholders of Triple Talaq before tabling the bill in the ongoing session of Parliament.

Kunhalikutty, who made a hard-hitting speech in parliament on the President’s address,  said IUML strongly objects to the statement of the Prime Minister which it considers a dangerous move of the government and it amounts to direct interference in  Muslim Personal Law.

“My party IUML strongly objects to the above statement of the Prime Minister which is a dangerous move by the government. As far as implementation of the Uniform Civil Code is concerned with regard to the Muslim community, this will be a direct intrusion into Shariah, the Muslim Personal Law which is the guiding torch of the community.” Since the statement is made by none other than the Prime Minister, the hidden agenda of the government is now out and crystal clear, he added.

He underlined that with the passing of Triple Talaq Bill, they (BJP), in real terms, want to implement the Uniform Civil Code, denying the rights and privileges of the citizens as enshrined in the Constitution.

Because of this, the  IUML has given notice for adjournment motion against the PM’s speech in Lok Sabha to the Speaker, Kunhalikutty, who hails from Kerala, said.
