Mukhtar Ansari Gets 10-year Jail Term in Kidnapping, Murder Case

The court sentenced former MLA Mukhtar Ansari and his brother and BSP MP Afzal Ansari to imprisonment for 10 years and four years, respectively in a 2007 Gangsters Act case.

GHAZIPUR — A Ghazipur Court on Saturday convicted former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mukhtar Ansari in a kidnapping and murder case.

The special MP/MLA court pronounced its verdict on Saturday and sentenced the ex-lawmaker to 10 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5 lakh, reports Bar & Bench.

The trial in the case under the the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act had concluded on April 1.

Mukhtar who is currently in Banda jail, was presented through video conferencing.

“Since morning, tight security was put in place outside the Ghazipur court. Traffic was stopped by barricading the road,” a local advocate said.

Ansari was booked for his involvement in the kidnapping of Vishwa Hindu Parishad office-bearer and coal tycoon Nandkishore Rungta in 1996 and the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Krishnanand Rai in 2005.

The MP/MLA court also sentenced Mukhtar Ansari’s brother, Afzal Ansar, BSP MP, to four years imprisonment in a Gangsters Act case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Afzal Ansari.

In 2007, a case was filed under Gangsters Act against Ansari brothers in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Rai.
