REWA – Chaos erupted at the Rewa District Court of Madhya Pradesh when a Hindu-Muslim couple arrived to register their marriage. A group of lawyers allegedly assaulted the couple upon discovering that the man was a Muslim and the woman a Hindu Brahmin, prompting police intervention to rescue them.
According to reports, a young man and woman from Rewa had come to the district court on Wednesday to complete legal formalities for their marriage. The woman, who was wearing a burqa, was consulting a lawyer when other legal practitioners began questioning the couple. Upon learning their identities, a group of lawyers allegedly turned violent and attacked the man.
Eyewitnesses state that the situation quickly escalated, with the lawyers not only assaulting the man but also turning their aggression towards the woman and bystanders who tried to intervene. Even police officers who arrived at the scene faced resistance from the mob.
To prevent further violence, police escorted the woman to safety in a jeep, while the man was taken away on a scooter. Authorities have confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Hindu right-wing organisations have claimed that the man deceived the woman under the pretext of love, referring to it as a case of “Love Jihad.” According to them, the couple had been in a relationship for over a year and a half, and the woman is reportedly six months pregnant. Members of these groups have called for strict legal action against the man.
The assault within court premises has raised serious concerns about law and order. Activists and legal experts have condemned the attack, stating that no group has the right to take the law into their own hands.
