MORADABAD – The Shahi Jamia Masjid which stands majestically on the banks of the Ramganga River is a historic landmark that has preserved its grandeur for nearly 400 years. The structure is a remarkable blend of ancient Mughal and modern architecture. The mosque holds a special place in India’s cultural and religious history,

Constructed during the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, this mosque is not just a place of worship but has played a pivotal role in the country’s freedom struggle

Rustam Khan, the vizier of Shah Jahan, was responsible for the construction of this mosque in 1637. Speaking about the mosque’s historical significance, Syed Fahad Ali, the Naib Imam of Jamia Masjid, said: “The Shahi Jamia Masjid is unique as it was built on the banks of the Ramganga River, unlike any other mosque in India. Despite its age, the mosque’s structure and relevance have stood the test of time.”

The mosque is designed to accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers within its premises, with the capacity expanding to over 100,000 during special occasions, thanks to the park and surrounding areas. The architectural design ensures that the mosque remains cool even in extreme heat, as it has been constructed to allow airflow from all sides.

“The design of the mosque is truly remarkable. Even on the hottest days, one can feel a pleasant breeze flowing through the mosque, providing comfort to the worshippers,” Syed Fahad Ali said.

The Shahi Jamia Masjid has also played a significant role in India’s freedom struggle. The first Imam of the mosque, Hazrat Maulana Syed Alam Ali, was a distinguished religious scholar who raised his voice against British rule. “Maulana Syed Alam Ali was a staunch advocate for the country’s freedom and was sentenced to death for his resistance. However, with the intervention of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University, who was then serving as Munsif in Moradabad, Maulana was honourably acquitted by the court,” Syed Fahad Ali recounted.

The lineage of imams serving at the mosque has continued unbroken since its establishment, with Syed Masoom Ali Azad currently serving as the ninth imam. The mosque’s history and its ongoing religious significance have made it an enduring symbol of Moradabad’s cultural heritage.

“The Shahi Jamia Masjid has been extended several times to meet the growing needs of the community, but its original structure and essence remain intact. This mosque is not just a place of worship; it is a symbol of our rich history and the resilience of our faith,” Syed Fahad Ali concluded.

The Shahi Jamia Masjid’s importance is further highlighted by its recognition in popular media. A question about the mosque was featured in the widely watched TV show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, underscoring its prominence in the national consciousness.
