NEW DELHI – President of All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawrat (AIMMM) Navaid Hamid on Wednesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to draw his attention towards the dilapidated condition of Jama Masjid.

Here is the full text of the letter:

Dear PM Shri Narendra Modi Sahab

May I draw your kind attention towards the dilapidation of Delhi’s historical Jama Masjid which is not only a national heritage but an internationally acclaimed place of worship usually visited by foreign dignitaries from time to time.

From 1956 onwards, the Government of India had been taking decisions as per requirements to engage and authorise Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to urgently respond to the required repairs and renovations in Jama Masjid by sanctioning the appropriate grants, as a special case.

Its undisputed historical importance can be gauged from the fact that in the year 2004, the Government of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had offered to take responsibility for all the required budget for the repairs and renovation in Jama Masjid but the then government had taken a considered decision to politely decline the offer because of the sensitivity in the issue.

This letter is being sent to request you to kindly consider to address the current emergent requirements of Jama Masjid whose Minarets, Domes, Kangooras, parts of ceilings are falling apart and in rains the water seeps in Domes and ceiling which expedite the quantum of damage to the structure and it is feared that any further delay will aggravate the damages in huge magnificent structure of this mosque.

As the mosque attracts a large number of foreign tourists daily, it is genuinely feared that there are possible chances of fatalities if any of the falling stone injures the visiting tourists.

I sincerely think that if your government finds it difficult to consider the request to sanction funds for required urgent repairs and renovation in Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid, kindly consider to depute a team of officers to the office of Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari, to engage with him and explore other options for undertaking the urgent task of renovations in the mosque.

It is also important to point out that the continuous dilapidation of Jama Masjid has started inviting attention of even visiting international media teams. The most recent is the report of BBC-Urdu which has relayed around eight minute report on the condition of Jama Masjid.

Therefore it is earnestly requested to kindly consider this request in light of the emergent requirements of historic Jama Masjid and sanction at least Rs. 100 crores, as a special case, for the required repairs in the mosque.

With personal regards

Navaid Hamid
