NEW DELHI — As a matter of serious concern for the local governments in different parts of the country and Central government, mob-lynching is on the go with different excuses.
Either beef-eating is suspected or cattle theft is taken as an excuse and recently the excuse of suspecting child-lifters, lynchers are having their time causing death to innocent people, or leaving them crippled for life.
Regretably, almost daily mob-lynching reports are finding place in newspapers and on TV channels.
On Friday, a mentally unstable woman was tied to a pole and tortured by a village mob, suspecting her to be a child-lifter, at Sonitpur in Assam, according to police, reports PTI.
When the woman was seen roaming around in a village under Thelamara police station in Sonitpur district, people suspected her to be child-lifter and punished her, Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Prithipal Singh said.
Some people questioned her. But, she could not reply properly due to her mental condition. This led to suspicion among people that she was a ‘sopadharaa’ (child-lifter), and they tied her to a pole to torture her,” Mr Singh said.
However, locals and personnel from the Village Defence Party (VDP) tried to stop the mob and alerted the police immediately, he said.
“Our team reached instantly and saved the woman. She received only minor injuries and was treated at a hospital,” Mr Singh said. The incident was also recorded ans shared on the social media.
“We have registered a case and identified three persons for making the video. Also, a few other people have been identified. We will take action and all of them will be arrested,” the SP said.
In another shocking incident of lynching, five persons were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being child lifters on Sunday in Rainpada village of Sakri taluka in Dhule district of Maharashtra.
In Tripura, three persons including one poor hawker from district Muzaffar Nagar of UP, were killed in as many separate incidents of lynching after rumors of child lifting on June 28.
Earlier in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, one cattle trader Qasim was lynched by a mob and 65-year-old Samiuddin was brutally assaulted on 14th June on suspicion of cow slaughter.
