JALGAON — The man accused of forcibly entering and vandalising the historic Mecca Masjid in the Zainabad Pinjari locality of Jalgaon city in Maharashtra was on Monday remanded to three days of police custody.

A tense situation arose outside the Sessions Court after rumours spread that the accused had been granted bail, prompting a large crowd to gather.

The suspect, Parveen Ramesh Koli, a resident of Valmiki Nagar, was arrested for entering the mosque with a sword and causing damage. As he was presented before the court on Monday afternoon, speculation regarding his release led to unrest. Fearing potential escalation, the police deployed additional forces, including three anti-riot squads and one Quick Response Team (QRT).

Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd outside the court premises grew rapidly following the rumours. “People were furious upon hearing that the accused might be released. Many gathered outside the court, demanding strict action,” said a resident.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandeep Gaut personally led efforts to control the situation, walking ahead of his team with batons to disperse the gathering. “We ensured law and order was maintained. Misinformation was spreading, and we took necessary steps to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said.

The vandalism incident, which took place around 11 am on Sunday, has sparked anger among the city’s Muslim community. Residents of Zainabad and other areas have expressed deep resentment over the act, describing it as a deliberate provocation.

“The mosque is not just a place of worship; it is part of our history. Such acts hurt the sentiments of the entire community,” said a local elder. Another resident added, “We want justice. Such actions must not be taken lightly.”

The Jalgaon police have assured the public that strict legal action will be taken against the accused. Senior officials have urged people not to believe in unverified reports and to maintain peace.

The situation in Jalgaon remains calm, but the incident has shaken the community. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further unrest.
