MALEGAON – Inordinate delay in the rehabilitation of scores of families affected by a devastating fire in their shanties last week in the Ayesha Nagar locality of Noor Nagar in Malegaon in Maharashtra’s Nasik District is causing grave concern. The disproportionate slowdown in the process has resulted in discomfort and unease among all the affected people.
These families are facing the harsh reality of winter with no clear rehabilitation timeline. Sharifbhai, President of the Noor Nagar Educational Society, expressed disappointment over the delay. In a phone conversation with Clarion India, he claimed that despite promises from government authorities and political parties, no concrete action has yet been taken.
Temporary accommodation for the victims has been arranged at Noor Nagar Hall, where 350 to 400 people are currently sheltered. However, with the severity of the winter season, challenges persist. Although well-wishers are providing meals to the families, issues such as reconstructing their huts, acquiring household utensils, and providing cash for essential items remain unaddressed.
A resident and a member of the Noor Nagar Shack Rehabilitation Committee, Nazir Khan, told Clarion India over the phone that despite promises from various organisations to rebuild the huts, no progress has been made. A survey of the affected area was conducted, and a review report was prepared, but subsequent actions have not materialised.
Rehana Shamsuzzha, a victim of the tragedy, emphasised the difficulties faced by girls and married women in the temporary accommodation. Absence of educational accessories for young children, especially those attending school, is compounding the challenges. The affected families are eager for the swift reconstruction of their homes to resume their normal life.
In a parallel development, electric line repair work is underway in Noor Nagar. Electric meters of the fire spared huts are being repaired, and electricity supply, which was blocked in several streets as a precaution, is gradually being restored.
