NEW DELHI – A group of miscreants, allegedly led by one Vishal Nagre, forced a Muslim youth to chant the Hindu slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and when the young man refused he was beaten black and blue.
The incident happened in Maharashtra’s Prabhani city on Sunday (February 11). The Muslim youth, named Sheikh Irfan Pathan, was with his friends in the city’s Raj Gopal Acharya Garden when the miscreants approached him and forced him to chant Hindu religious slogans, reports reaching here said in Tuesday.
Pathan, 19, is a second-year polytechnic student at Parbhani’s Shivaji College. He resides in the Dhangar Moha village of Gangakhed city.
Eyewitnesses recounted that Vishal demanded Pathan to chant “Jai Shri Ram.” Upon Pathan’s refusal, the miscreants started landing blows on him. Fearing for his life, Pathan fled the scene while the assault was recorded and circulated on social media platforms.
Getting wind of the incident, prominent youth leaders, Hafiz Syed Mohtashim and Syed Zubair swiftly intervened. They accompanied Pathan to Naya Mondha Police Station, where a formal complaint was lodged.
Police have initiated action against Vishal and his accomplices under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, with Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Rajinder Munde overseeing the investigation.
In a separate incident near Kali Kaman on Bismat Road, another Muslim youth, Syed Mudassar Ibn Abdul Habib, fell victim to similar brutality. Miscreants forced him to chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” overturning his cart and stealing his belongings. Mudassar, the victim, reported the incident to Naya Mondha Police Station, leading to the registration of a case against the perpetrators.
The news of the assaults spread rapidly through the city’s WhatsApp groups, heightening tensions. Responding to the outcry, a group of minority youth gathered at Naya Mondha police station, demanding swift action against the culprits. Police authorities assured the protesters of immediate arrests and tightened security measures in the city.
Dr. Qazi Muhammad Riazuddin, the regional president of Marhatwara, condemned the attacks and pledged to support efforts to ensure justice for the victims.
These incidents underscore the importance of promoting harmony and tolerance within communities, urging authorities to take decisive action against those inciting violence based on religious beliefs.
