Left Out: Commercial Tax Departments in 10 States, 3 UTs Have no Muslim Officials

NEW DELHI – India has the world’s third-largest Muslim population, about 14.2 percent of the total as per the last census held in 2011. However, Muslim representation in several sectors does not match up with the community’s strength.

Ten states and three Union Territories (UTs) have no Muslims among the total of 392 officials in their Commercial Tax departments in Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Goa. Bihar has 16 Muslims among 309 officials while the number is 14 in Andhra Pradesh which has 318 officials, according to a new book, Muslims in India Ground Reality Verses Fake Narratives Achievements & Accomplishments

Five of the 90 officials in Assam are Muslims. In Jammu and Kashmir, the count is 28 Muslims among 36 officials. Uttar Pradesh has 42 Muslims among 2,638 officials. In Revenue Departments, out of 1,115 officials across states, 74 are Muslims, with the highest in Bihar – 15 out of 173 – and 11 out of 23 in Jammu and Kashmir. In as many as 18 states, there are no Muslims among officials in the Revenue Departments. 

The State has set a revenue target of Rs 85,112 crore to the Commercial Taxes department for 2024-25, 18 percent higher than the previous fiscal’s Rs 72,295 crores achieved during the fiscal 2023-24 and Rs19,000 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal.

There are only 309 Muslims out of a total of 10,304 officials in the Commercial Tax departments across the country. These major revenue-earning departments contribute about 65 to 70 percent of the total revenue of the State. 

The highest number of Muslim officials in Commercial Taxes is in West Bengal – 60 out of 969. Next comes Karnataka with 55 Muslims among a total of 1,019. Maharashtra has 26 Muslims among 1,762 officials.

There are only two Muslims among 248 senior management teams of the Department of Commercial Taxes in Telangana which came up on the map in 2014 as India’s 29th state.
