The Patna District Court says investigation would continue and the police could question Khan Sir, but barred any coercive action, including arrest
PATNA — A Patna District Court on Tuesday granted interim protection from arrest to prominent educator Faisal Khan, widely known as Khan Sir, in connection with a firing incident outside his coaching institute earlier this month.
The relief came while the court was hearing Khan Sir’s anticipatory bail plea. An FIR had been filed after violence and vandalism were reported at Khan Global Studies Institute in Kadamkuan on June 2.
Kadamkuan Police Station registered the FIR under Sections 109 and 418/2026 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 25(9), 27, and 35 of the Arms Act. Three people were named, including Khan Sir.
On June 2, shots were allegedly fired outside the institute, injuring a security guard. The FIR was based on video footage that appeared to show two guards firing. Both guards were later arrested.
The court has allowed the investigation to continue and permitted police to question Khan Sir, but barred any coercive action, including arrest, while the interim protection is in place.
What Triggered the Violence
Police said the incident began with a violent clash outside Khan Global Studies Institute in Patna’s Kadamkuan area. A group of 15 to 20 people allegedly vandalised the centre, tore down posters, and pelted stones.
CCTV clips that surfaced on social media showed chaos outside the institute and security guards allegedly firing into the air. Two guards employed by the coaching centre were detained and later taken into custody.
During questioning, investigators claimed the guards admitted to firing two rounds each from licensed rifles, stating they acted on Khan Sir’s instructions. Based on those statements, police named Khan Sir and two others in the FIR.
Khan Sir’s Defence
Khan Sir has denied any role in the alleged firing. His lawyer, Arvind Kumar Mahuar, told the court the FIR was part of a conspiracy to harm the educator’s reputation. “The guards may have acted in self-defence after the institute was attacked. There is no evidence directly linking Khan Sir to the firing,” Mahuar argued. The defence sought protection from arrest while the probe continues and maintained Khan Sir did not orchestrate the incident.
Rivalry Angle and Protests
Police suspect the violence may be tied to a rivalry between Khan Global Studies and another coaching institute. After complaints from Khan Sir’s institute, the police arrested the director of a rival coaching centre and several of his associates.
However, the case escalated after videos of the alleged firing by security personnel appeared online. Khan Sir had earlier blamed associates of a rival institute for the vandalism. Supporters of that rival institute, in turn, accused Khan Sir of staging the incident.
Separately, supporters of Roshan Anand, director of Gyan Bindu Coaching, held protests and candlelight marches in Patna demanding his release and alleging investigative bias. Some warned of larger protests if Khan Sir is not arrested. The court has reserved its order on Roshan Anand’s anticipatory bail plea.
The controversy widened after Bihar’s fire services department reportedly served a notice to Khan Sir’s coaching institute for alleged fire safety violations.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and witness statements to reconstruct the events of June 2. Further hearings in the case are expected in the coming days.
