NEW DELHI — The Delhi government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has decided to not object to the trial of anti-CAA activist Umar Khalid held under a terror law in connection with a conspiracy case in Delhi riots.

The Delhi police have already received approval from the Home Ministry to prosecute Khalid under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Reports said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration has cleared the prosecution sanction against Khalid who is facing charges of hatching a conspiracy against the Central government that led to violence in the last week of February earlier this year.

“We have given prosecution sanction in all the Delhi riots-related cases registered by the police. Now, it is up to the courts to see who the accused are,” a senior Delhi government functionary was quoted by news agency PTI.

The police can now name him in the pending supplementary charge-sheet.

Khalid, former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader, was arrested in September after being frequently summoned and questioned in the Delhi riots conspiracy case.

Kejriwal has been previously criticised for turning his back towards Muslims during the riots days after they overwhelmingly voted for his party.

In addition to this, the police have already received approval from the Home Ministry to prosecute Khalid under Section 13 of the UAPA.
