NEW DELHI — Eminent Kashmiri journalist Arjumand Shaheen has won the prestigious Laadli Media and Advertising Award for Gender Sensitivity, 2024 for her 2022 report on “Kashmir’s Proxy Sarpanches.”
Shaheen was honoured in the Web, Jury Appreciation Citation (Certificate) in English Category.
The award was bestowed upon Ms Shaheen at a ceremony this week in Mumbai. The journalist who currently works for ‘Clarion India’ won laurels for her report titled Kashmir’s Proxy Sarpanches: Women Elected To Reserved Seats Have Become Rubber Stamps For Men for highlighting male dominance and governance issues in Kashmiri local governing bodies.
The report published by Article-14.com in 2022 sheds light on the proxy practice of “Sarpanch Patis” and exposes how the statutory posts intended to empower women are being misused.
Ms Shaheen was recognised for her contribution towards promoting gender sensitivity through media.
Laadli Media and Advertising Awards are a platform that acknowledges and honours journalists and media professionals every year. The awards focus on promoting gender sensitivity by challenging the patriarchal and misogynistic mindset in society.
