Karnataka to Issue Permanent Residence Certificates to Curb Deletion During SIR

Date:

The certificates would provide citizens with an additional government document to establish their residential status and help ensure that eligible voters are not excluded from the electoral rolls during the SIR

NEW DELHI — Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Monday announced that the state government will issue permanent residence certificates to eligible residents to facilitate participating in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The certificates would provide citizens with an additional government document to establish their residential status and help ensure that eligible voters are not excluded from the electoral rolls during the SIR exercise, officials said.

The eligible residents can obtain the permanent residence certificate through both online and offline modes. The chief minister added that the certificates will be made available digitally via the Seva Sindhu portal as well as through designated government offices.

With an appeal to citizens to actively participate in the revision exercise, Shivakumar urged all eligible voters to complete their enrolment and ensure their names are correctly included in the electoral rolls.

“Whoever wants a permanent residence certificate will get it both online and offline. The government will make the process simple and accessible for everyone,” the chief minister said.

The move will assist eligible voters in furnishing the necessary documents required during the SIR process. The government wants to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls ahead of future elections.

The government has authorised deputy tahsildars, tahsildars and other officers notified by the government or district deputy commissioners to issue the certificates. Assistant commissioners have been designated as appellate authorities, while deputy commissioners will act as revisional authorities.

CM Submits His Form

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivakumar launched the enumeration exercise by submitting his form at his Sadashivanagar residence in Bengaluru.

He urged all eligible voters to complete the exercise to safeguard their voting rights. He underlined that voter registration is key to accessing government benefits.

Addressing the media, Shivakumar admitted that he found the form slightly difficult to fill as it required detailed information, but said the process was important to ensure that every eligible citizen remained on the electoral roll.

“I found the form a little difficult because many details have to be entered. There is an option to provide residential and caste certificates wherever they are accepted,” he said.

“If you do not safeguard your voter identity today, you may face difficulties in accessing government benefits in the future,” he said. — With inputs from IANS
