“Notice under S160 CrPC was issued for Sharjeel Imaam on 27.01.2020 by the Crime Branch, Delhi Police. Sharjeel has surrendered to Delhi Police at 3pm on 28.01.2020. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime Branch Rajesh Dev claimed that the police team arrested him. “Our team present in Bihar has caught Sharjeel. He was arrested from the Kako police station area in Jehanabad,” Dev was quoted by the IANS as saying.
“At present, the team has taken him to the Kako police station for legal proceedings. He will be brought to Delhi after we get a transit remand.”
Sharjeel had been booked for sedition by the police on January 26 after a video of him surfaced on social media. In the speech, he can be heard speaking of cutting off Assam and Northeast by blocking roads and trans-portion. But the BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra claimed that he is talking about breaking away Assam and North east from India even though he clarified that he was meant for the roadblocks. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Markendy Katju said that he did not commit legal crime and all FIRs should be quashed.
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, besides Delhi Police had registered cases against Sharjeel under various sections, including sedition.
Delhi Police had served a notice to him under Section 160 to record his statement in connection with the video.
