RANCHI — A 22-year-old Muslim youth was beaten to death by a mob over allegations of mobile theft at Jugigadiya village in Jharkhand’s Pakur district on Monday night.
The deceased has been identified as Samiullah Shaikh from Kulphadi village. The lynching incident came to light when villagers saw Shaikh lying near a mine and informed the Mufassil police station on Tuesday. The police took Shaikh to the police station where he was declared dead.
According to reports, a group of 5-6 persons brutally assaulted Shaikh and as he fell unconscious he was left near the mine.
Shaikh’s family members said the victim was alive when he was found lying near the mine and police took him to the police station.
“In the morning, we were informed about the incident. Shaikh’s family members reached the spot where he was lying unconscious. We were told that he was still alive. He died on his way to the police station. We brought the dead body home,” said a relative of the deceased.
According to SHO Sanjiv Kumar Jha, Shaikh was beaten with sticks. There were several injury marks on the body. The police are investigating the matter.
Three persons, Suraj Mrandi, Anil Hebram and Babudham Murmu, have been taken into custody and they are being interrogated, SHO Jha said.
An FIR has been registered at the Mufassil police station.
Meanwhile, political leaders and activists have slammed Hemant Soren government for failing to stop the incidents of lynching in the state.
Mohammed Shakir, state president of All India Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), said: “Another mob lynching!!! 22-year-old Samiul Sheikh, a resident of Jugigariya village in Pakur district was brutally beaten to death with sticks by the villagers on the charge of mobile theft. Despite having a so-called secular government in the state, not a single month goes by when there are no lynchings of Muslims.”
Kashif Bharti, state president of Azad Samaj Party, said hate speeches by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders play a leading role in these lynching incidents.
“Despite having a so-called secular government in the state, not a single month goes by when there is no lynching and murder of Muslims.@HemantSorenJMM Yes, the continuous statements against Muslims by leaders like Nishikant Dubey and Babulal Marandi are becoming the reason for these killings, stop this otherwise Bhim Army Azad Samaj Party (K) will be forced to launch a state-wide movement,” said Bharti.
