NEW DELHI – Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), a premier organisation of the country’s Muslims, has demanded the suspension of Delhi Police officers involved in the recent brutal beating of Muslim youth in the Madhu Vihar police station of the city.

In a letter to the Joint Commissioner of Police (CP) Sagar Singh Kalsi of the Eastern Range, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind chief Maulana Mahmood Asa’d Madani detailed a complaint regarding police abuse and Islamophobic action against Arif Saleem, a resident of Block West Vinod Nagar.

The letter was handed over to the senior police official by Maulana Hakimuddin Qasmi, JUH general secretary on Friday.

A delegation from the Jamiat local unit had previously visited Arif Salim at his home in the national capital.

Arif was allegedly beaten by police officers who also hurled derogatory religious slurs at him, though it was a minor issue related to a traffic violation. Arif was first beaten up, then taken to the police station where he was brutally beaten again in a dark room.

Due to severe injuries and psychological trauma, Arif requires close medical supervision.

Maulana Madani’s letter also demanded that the police department provide the victim with necessary medical treatment. Furthermore, the letter called for immediate suspension and legal action against the guilty police officers and staff. An independent inquiry into the matter and full protection for Arif’s family have also been requested.

Maulana Qasmi emphasised to the Joint CP that the police are meant to protect the people, and the incident involving Arif was “unacceptable”. The Joint CP assured the delegation that all possible actions would be taken to ensure justice for the victim.
