NEW DLEHI — The administration at the Jamia Millia Islamia has put up photographs and personal details of the students on display who took part in protests at the campus against the disciplinary action and crackdown.
The personal details of 17 students including six women are mentioned in a notice carrying names, student ID numbers, mobile numbers, email addresses, home addresses, academic departments, and affiliated organisations, was pasted on the gates of the campus.
The notice titled “List of active students who organised a protest without any permission on 10/02/2025 at 5:00 PM at the central canteen hall”.
Several students were holding dharna at the campus demanding to revoke the disciplinary action taken against student leaders for marking ‘Jamia Resistance Day’ on 15 December last year. On 15 December 2019, Delhi police had launched a brutal crackdown on the students protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens.
On Thursday Morning, the police again launched crackdown on the protesting students detaining several of them at different police stations. The Jamia administration asked the police to remove the students from the protest site claiming the vandalization of the properties.
On Friday, the administration has again courted controversy when it put up the personal details of the students.
A student activist Neha took to social media raising objections to the action of the university with regard to the public display of personal details.
“In a clear act of vendetta by @jmiu_official, it has made the details of protesting students public! The address & phone numbers of protesting have been pasted outside Jamia’s gates for everyone to see in gross violation of the privacy of students,” wrote Neha along with a photo of the display of personal details.
She asked who will be responsible if these students get attacked?
“Nothing! nothing justifies this act of the Jamia admin! There are young women in this list and students just out of their teens. Nothing gives the Jamia admin the right to destroy the futures of these students! With the amount of bad press Jamia as a minority institution gets & the notoriety associated with the idea of protests, this a nothing but a clear call for harassment and/or attack against these students! Who is responsible if these students r harmed?,” said the student leader.
Noted activist Shabnam Hashmi also slammed the Jamia administration demanding the immediate withdrawal of these personal details of the students.
“In a clear act of vendetta by the Jamia administration, it has pasted phone & addresses of the protesting students outside Jamia’s gates for everyone to see in gross violation of the privacy of students. Shame on the Jamia administration. Remove this notice immediately,” she demanded.
Former MP and Congress leader Kunwar Danish Ali also criticized the administration describing the action of the university “disturbing”.
“It’s so disturbing to see the pictures of the protesting students with their phone numbers and addresses, displaying outside the university gates. The Jamia administration should avoid taking such vindictive steps, violating students privacy,” he said.
