ALIGARH — On Wednesday, tensions flared in Aligarh after an Israeli flag was painted on a road in the Civil Lines area. The flag, located near Kila Pul, just 500 meters from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), quickly caught the attention of locals, causing unrest in the area. Authorities were immediately alerted, and the police swiftly arrived to remove the flag.
Speaking about the incident, SP City Mrigang Shekhar Pathak confirmed that the police responded promptly after receiving information about the flag. “We took immediate action to remove the flag and prevent any escalation,” he said. “No complaints have been lodged yet, but investigations are ongoing. We are questioning nearby residents to identify the individuals responsible for this act, and strict action will be taken against them.”
The timing of the flag’s display has raised further concerns, given the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and the significant loss of Palestinian lives. With over 48,000 Palestinians, including women and children, reported dead due to Israeli attacks, the display of the Israeli flag in such a sensitive context has the potential to inflame tensions. Local groups in India, including members of the Muslim community, have strongly opposed the violence in Palestine, and such incidents are seen as a provocative act.
The flag was positioned at a short distance from AMU, further compounding the seriousness of the situation. The police are determined to trace the culprits and bring them to justice. “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure peace and order in the area,” SP Pathak added.
