HYDERABAD — The iconic Jama Masjid Afzal Gunj, a symbol of Hyderabad’s rich cultural heritage, is in dire need of renovation as its minarets have fallen into disrepair, exacerbated by recent rains.

Built in 1866 during the reign of Asif Jah Mir Afzal-ud-Daula Bahadur, the fifth Nizam of Hyderabad, the Afzalgunj Jama Masjid stands as a testament to Qutb Shahi and Deccan architectural styles. Commissioned by Hussain Bee, the wife of Mir Afzal-ud-Daula Bahadur, this historic mosque has long been a spiritual and architectural landmark in the city.

However, concerns have mounted over the deteriorating condition of the mosque. The minarets, roof, arches, and courtyard have all suffered significant decay over the years. Despite appeals from the mosque committee and efforts initiated after the intervention of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi in the state assembly, the renovation work has faced hurdles.

“Worshippers have been facing difficulties due to water seepage into the mosque caused by the incomplete repair work,” said Muhammad Ejaz, a mosque official, expressing concern over the halted construction for the past four months.

Deputy imam of the mosque highlighted the urgency of completing the renovation, especially with the onset of the rainy season. “The work commenced a year ago but was abruptly halted after just three months. We urge the government to expedite the renovation to alleviate the hardships faced by worshippers,” he said.

Local residents and worshippers continue to wait anxiously for the government’s response to complete the renovation of this historical landmark, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
