HYDERABAD – Officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Tuesday demolished the boundary wall of Masjid-e-Habeeb Unnisa at HMT Maqtha in Miyapur village of Serilingampally mandal using a bulldozer. Officials claim that the mosque was constructed on full tank level (FTL) land, warranting its demolition, despite the presence of numerous similar surrounding buildings.

Local Muslims strongly protested against the demolition drive. When municipal staff arrived with a bulldozer, residents, including many women, physically blocked the machinery. Despite their efforts, the mosque’s wall was partially demolished. Facing intense resistance, municipal authorities retreated but warned of returning with a larger force to complete the demolition.

The 225 square yards of land on which the mosque stands was reportedly purchased through an official registry and dedicated by a benefactor. Constructed four years ago with a tin shed, the mosque had recently planned an expansion due to an increase in the number of worshippers. Local Muslims received a demolition notice on May 20, sparking accusations of a systematic and conspiratorial attempt by the authorities to demolish the mosque with minimal notice.

Leader of Majlis Bachao Tehreek, Amjadullah Khan Khalid, expressed strong disapproval of the municipal action. Khalid argued that the mosque was being unfairly targeted, highlighting the presence of similar large buildings nearby.

“This biased attitude of the local authorities is unacceptable. The mosque, which they claim is on FTL land, stands among many other significant structures. This action seems part of an organised conspiracy,” said Khalid. He vowed to raise the issue with the government, municipal commissioner, and police commissioner.
