NEW DELHI – A look at the party-wise vote tally is enough to determine the negative role played by the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) in the just concluded UP assembly elections. They was instrumental in dividing anti-BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) votes and thereby spoiling the chance of the Samajwadi Party (SP) from many seats.
The SP alliance has bagged 125 seats in the elections while the BJP, along with its alliance, registered a massive victory by grabbing as many as 273 seats.
The numbers of votes the BSP scored shows that on most of the seats, the party garnered far more votes than the SP candidates were defeated by. On most of the seats, Mayawati’s party has assumed a third position. The party got 12.8 % votes, but registered victory on only one seat.
On the other hand, on seven seats, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has also got more votes than the votes the SP candidates were defeated by. There are 22 seats where the BJP and the SP had a direct fight. The defeat margin on these seats was less than 4,000 votes. On nine of the 22 seats, the defeat margin was less than 1,000 votes.
