NEW DELHI — A former Hathras BJP MLA Rajveer Singh Pehelwanon Sunday headed a meeting at a guest house in Hathras in support of the four upper-caste men arrested for the alleged brutal murder and rape of a 19-year-old girl.
Media reports said over 500 people attended the meeting in which slogans were raised in support of the accused and the attendees demanded “justice” for the quartet.
Pehelwan claimed that the meeting welcomed the CBI inquiry in the case as he said the victim’s family should also undergo narco tests even as activists have said that it was illegal for the government to force people to the test.
“We held a meeting of all castes today where it was discussed that it was a good decision by the government to call for a CBI inquiry and a narco test. If the family of the victim has nothing to hide, they should not be afraid of it. Strict action should also be taken against those who filed a wrong complaint,” Pehelwan was quoted by Indian Express as saying.
Earlier another gathering of upper-caste Thakurs was held by some people outside the village.
These meetings and rallies in support of the upper castes have been denounced by activists who say the government is trying to shield the accused.
