NEW DELHI – A young Dalit female student of a college allegedly died by suicide due to mounting pressure over unpaid college fees in Haryana’s Bhiwani district. The police have confirmed filing an abetment to suicide case against four individuals, including the college principal, following the incident that occurred on December 24.
The 22-year-old victim, a resident of Singhani village, was a dedicated learner enrolled at Sharda College in Bhiwani district. Her father, Jagdish, revealed that financial difficulties prevented him from paying the Rs 35,000 in pending fees for the 2024-25 academic year.
This financial strain resulted in her being barred from attending her fifth-semester exams on December 6 and eventually led to her expulsion from the institution, according to reports.
The family has alleged continuous harassment, which they claim pushed the student to take the drastic step. Speaking to the media, Jagdish further said, “Hanuman Singh, the college administrator’s son harassed her repeatedly over the phone. Overwhelmed by this harassment, she died by suicide.” He also accused Singh’s son, daughter, and the principal of coercing her into unethical activities, which further exacerbated her distress.
Responding to the allegations, Hanuman Singh refuted the claims, labelling them as baseless. “There was no personal involvement with the girl,” he stated, adding that he is fully prepared to cooperate with the ongoing investigation to prove his innocence.
Bhiwani Police station in-charge Jitender Singh confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of abetment to suicide against Hanuman Singh, his son and daughter, and the college principal. “We are investigating all aspects of the case, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.
The incident has brought attention to the challenges faced by students from marginalised communities, including financial hardships and systemic barriers, prompting calls for greater accountability and reforms in educational institutions. The case has sparked outrage among local residents and activists, who are demanding a thorough and impartial probe to ensure justice for the young student.
