HYDERABAD — A group of residents staged a protest in the Natraj Nagar area of Tappachabutra here on Thursday, demanding action against former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MLA Goshamahal T Raja Singh over his incendiary remarks about the Muslim community.
The protestors marched through local streets carrying placards and raising slogans calling for the legislator’s arrest. Police personnel accompanied the procession to maintain law and order as the protest moved through the locality.
The protest comes days after Mehdipatnam Police registered a case against Raja Singh under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts that promote enmity or hatred between different groups.
The case was registered following a complaint filed by Salman Khan, a Hyderabad resident, on June 4.
In his complaint, Khan alleged that recent statements made by the MLA had hurt religious sentiments and could potentially disrupt communal harmony.
Police initiated legal proceedings after a video featuring the remarks circulated widely on social media and drew criticism from across the country.
Protesters in Tappachabutra urged authorities to take strict action in the matter, arguing that inflammatory statements by public figures can create tensions between communities and disturb social peace.
The investigation into the case is currently underway.
