NEW DELHI — The body of a Youth Congress worker was found stuffed in a suitcase near a bus stand in Haryana’s Rohtak district on Saturday, police said.

The suitcase was spotted by passers-by near the Sampla bus stand and they informed the police. The police and a forensic team reached the spot and found the victim’s body, later identified as that of 22-year-old Himani Narwal.

Police said the victim’s neck was wrapped with a dupatta and she had mehndi (henna) on her hands. Police suspect that Narwal, a resident of Rohtak’s Vijay Nagar area, may have been strangulated with the dupatta. Her body was taken to PGIMS Rohtak for a post-mortem examination, media reports reaching here said on Sunday.

The Congress demanded a high-level probe into the death of Narwal, who was associated with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. The incident came on the eve of municipal elections to 33 bodies across the state, with the results to be out on March 12.

The Congress, in a post on X, expressed condolences over the party worker’s death and demanded an impartial investigation into the matter. Narwal had posted many photos of herself with former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s son and Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda, and party legislator BB Batra on social media.

Reacting to the development, Batra demanded an SIT investigation into the matter and said Narwal used to participate in every programme of the Congress party.

Congress MP Hooda questioned Haryana’s law and order situation and demanded the accused be arrested soon.

Sampla police station in-charge Vijendra Singh said a case had been registered. Police said further action would be taken after receiving the post-mortem report.

Bhupinder Hooda, the former chief minister, said the news of Narwal’s “barbaric murder” was “shocking” and demanded a high-level impartial probe into the incident. “The news of the barbaric murder of Congress worker Himani Narwal in Rohtak is extremely sad and shocking. I pay my tribute to the departed soul and express my deepest condolences to the family members. This in itself is a blot on the law and order situation of the state,” he tweeted in Hindi.

“There should be a high-level impartial investigation of this murder and the government should provide justice to the victim’s family as soon as possible and provide the harshest punishment to the culprits,” he said.
