GANDHINAGAR — A heated debate erupted in the Gujarat Assembly during the budget session as Congress MLA Imran Khedawala strongly objected to a statement made by Minister Jagdish Vikrama. The discussion turned tense when Vikrama claimed that “most encroachments around religious places have been carried out by a particular community.”

Khedawala, the only Muslim MLA in Gujarat, took strong exception to the remark, alleging that BJP leaders target him solely because of his religious identity. “I am the only Muslim MLA in Gujarat, and that is why I am being singled out,” he said. He urged the Muslim community to stay vigilant and choose the right leaders who can voice their concerns both in and outside the assembly.

Khedawala, who represents the Jamalpur-Khadia constituency, stressed that his election victory was not based on communal politics. “BJP leaders see me only as a Muslim MLA, but I have been elected with the votes of both Hindus and Muslims,” he asserted. “My constituency has 60% Muslims and 40% Hindus, and I represent everyone equally.”

Refuting allegations of engaging in religious politics, Khedawala reaffirmed his commitment to India’s secular fabric. “This is our country, and we will live and die in this soil,” he said.
