MUMBAI – An elderly Muslim man who suffered abuse, thrashing and harassment at the hands of some Hindutva youth on a train near Igatpuri in Maharashtra last week, was rushed to a hospital here on Wednesday after his condition worsened. However, later his condition was described as stable by his family members.

Haji Ashraf Munyar, from Chalis village, is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital after suffering severe injuries in the attack by a group of unruly youths.

The elderly man, travelling to his daughter’s home in Kalyan, was mercilessly beaten up on suspicion of carrying beef with him. The inhuman treatment meted out to the elderly person came to light a couple of days later when a video of the incident went viral.

The attack left the elderly man with internal injuries near his eye, stomach, and urinary tube. He was rushed to the hospital after his condition worsened. According to family members, his condition is currently stable, but doctors have advised further tests, including a CT scan and sonography, to assess the extent of his injuries.

Despite the severity of the incident, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Thane initially invoked only minor charges against the accused. The youths were subsequently granted bail, sparking outrage and demands for more serious charges to be brought against them.

In response to the public outcry, the GRP recorded Munyar statement again on Sunday evening. He was taken to Thane Civil Hospital for a medical examination on Monday, where doctors confirmed the presence of deep internal injuries. Following this, he was transferred to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa and later moved to Sign Hospital for specialised care.

Speaking to the media, Ashfaq Syed, the son of the victim, expressed his concerns about his father’s condition. “Since the accident, my father has been experiencing blurred vision and severe pain in the lower abdomen. The doctors have conducted X-rays and have recommended further tests, including a CT scan and sonography, to determine the full extent of the damage,” he said.

The case has drawn attention to the need for stricter legal action against the perpetrators of such acts of violence. The family and supporters are calling for the authorities to take swift and decisive action to ensure that justice is served.
