NEW DELHI – A Delhi court has granted 15 days of interim bail to Shahrukh Pathan, an accused in Delhi riots case for allegedly pointing a gun at a police officer during the February 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, on the grounds of his father’s hospitalisation.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Courts on Friday granted relief to Pathan for taking care of his ailing father and arranging funds for the family.

Pathan’s counsels, Khalid Akhtar and Abdullah Akhtar argued for the interim bail, citing necessary personal grounds. The prosecution had opposed the plea, contending that Pathan’s release, even for a short period, could impact the case proceedings.

After hearing both sides, Judge Bajpai granted Pathan interim bail for 15 days, imposing conditions to ensure he does not influence witnesses or disrupt the ongoing investigation. The court also directed him to furnish a surety bond and provide his location details to the investigating authorities during the bail period.

“The applicant is directed to give his mobile number to the IO and will keep the same with him on ‘Switch ON’ mode. Further, the applicant will not contact the other accused and the witnesses in this case. Further, the applicant will give his attendance in the PS Jafarabad on every alternate day between 10-11 am,” the court said.

Pathan is one of the several accused facing charges related to the largely anti-Muslim riots which rocked the capital’s northeast region and led to multiple casualties and extensive property damage. The case has been under rigorous legal scrutiny, with scores of arrests and ongoing trials.

Legal experts see the interim bail as a temporary relief rather than an indication of any leniency in the proceedings against him. Pathan is expected to surrender to the authorities upon completion of the bail period as per the court’s directives.
