NEW DELHI – Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj, known for his remarkable rise in the world of cricket, on Friday assumed charge as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Telangana. The state government honoured Siraj for his outstanding contributions to Indian cricket and his success on the international stage.
Siraj, a native of Hyderabad, has emerged as one of India’s finest fast bowlers in recent years. He made his debut for the Indian cricket team in 2017 and quickly won accolades for his pace, accuracy, and determination. Coming from a humble background, with his father working as an auto-rickshaw driver, Siraj’s journey to the national team has been a testament to his hard work and perseverance.
Mohammed Siraj’s rise as a seamer was remarkably swift. He only began playing the game in Class VII. It was in 2015 that he first bowled with a cricket ball. In 2017, he bagged an IPL contract worth Rs 2.6 crore. Months later, he was wearing an India shirt and bowling in a T20 international against New Zealand.
Potential translated to performance when he was his state’s highest wicket-taker playing only his second season of Ranji Trophy – 41 wickets in nine matches. He was subsequently picked to play for the Rest of India and was brought on board by the India A team as well for a tour of South Africa in July-August 2017. The step up to the big league arrived soon after.
His breakthrough came during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he played a pivotal role in India’s historic Test series victory. Over the years, Siraj has grown into one of the key members of the Indian cricket team, especially in Test and One-Day International (ODI) formats.
The Telangana government has recently announced Siraj’s appointment as a DSP. This honorary position was given in recognition of his achievements and his ability to inspire millions, especially the youth of Telangana.
The appointment of sportspersons to such positions is a common practice in India, where governments seek to honour and encourage athletes who have brought pride to the nation. It serves as a symbol of respect for their achievements and their ability to motivate the younger generation to pursue excellence in sports.
Recognition of Excellence
The appointment reflects the state’s acknowledgment of Siraj’s excellence in cricket. His perseverance, discipline, and sportsmanship are qualities that align with the principles expected of a law enforcement officer, making his honorary role as DSP a fitting tribute to his character.
The Telangana government’s decision is a source of pride for both the cricketer and the state. It underscores Telangana’s commitment to recognising its local talents and encouraging youth participation in sports. Moreover, it is expected that Siraj’s appointment will motivate young athletes across the country to pursue their passions while contributing positively to society.
