NEW DELHI – The controversy created by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind chief Mahmood Madani’s remarks about All India Majlis-e Ittihadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi and his support for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is refusing to die down. It has completely riled Muslims across the nation and caused immense anger in the community.

In a recent interview with pro-Bharatiya Janata Party anchor Sushant Sinha, Madani accused Owaisi of playing divisive politics and making provocative statements. Madani also called supporters of Owaisi “mad” and he supported the implementation of the NRC across the country.

Sharing the interview clip wherein Madani is seen supporting the implementation of the NRC, Sinha wrote, “Maulana Madani is saying with full confidence that NRC should be implemented. He is saying that Jamiat also has the same stand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah should take cognizance of the matter. The country needs NRC.”

Madani made the remarks in support of the NRC even though massive protests had erupted against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the NRC in December 2019.

Upset with Madani remarks, prominent Islamic scholar Maulana Salman Nadwi wants him to resign as Jamiat chief and hand over the post to someone capable of making appropriate and fair decisions and showing strong commitment.

“He should hand over the leadership to the one who is capable of representing the religion and its teaching in a better way. He should now be concerned about his life in the Hereafter. He was in politics and a position of leadership for a long time. This leadership is not going to help anymore. The community needs new leadership,” said Nadwi.

He referred Madani as the one who had divided the Jamiat and wanted to snatch away everything from his uncle Maulana Arshad Madani.

According to Nadwi, Maulana Mahmood Madani thinks that he has all the knowledge of politics and its tactics. But it is his misunderstanding about himself. Due to this misunderstanding, he attacks the leader of his community.

Nadwi said he had supported the party of Owaisi during the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

“I want to urge all Muslims to strengthen their leadership and bring together all the oppressed and marginalised communities. Make joint efforts for justice and against oppression. Always be ready to help the oppressed and don’t take care of only own community and support all people,” he said.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, religious leaders from the community held a meeting and passed a resolution condemning Mahmood Madani’s remarks.

“Asaduddin Owaisi is a strong voice for the rights of Muslims. Maulana Madani has completely rejected his voice, efforts and politics. All the participants of the meeting expressed concerns over these remarks,” said Qari Mohammed Khalid, founder of Isa Islamic Library in Muzaffarnagar.

He said that Madani called the supporters of AIMIM mad people at a time when the party is taking out rallies against those making sacrilegious remarks against Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Khalid also criticised Madani for supporting the NRC saying that Madani wants to destroy Muslims by implementing the proposed legislation.
