“Is SIT there to probe about the crime or to save the Chief Minister of the state. There are many unanswered questions raised by the family,” Congress spokesperson Sushmita Dev questioned.

NEW DELHI — The Congress on Monday questioned the role of SIT and Uttar Pradesh Police in the Hathras case after the government alleged a conspiracy by vested groups in the state.

Reacting to the issue, Congress spokesperson Sushmita Dev attacked the Uttar Pradesh government for ‘messing up the case to save the Chief Minister’, and coming up with fake theories. The Congress has reiterated its demand for the resignation of the Chief Minister.

“The SIT has been exposed,” said Dev.

“Is SIT there to probe about the crime or to save the Chief Minister of the state. There are many unanswered questions raised by the family,” she questioned.

The Congress said, “If the CBI inquiry has been ordered, then why the SIT is on the ground. The family has demanded a judicial inquiry. Who is shielding the DM?”

In the Hathras case, the Uttar Pradesh government said on Sunday, “This is actually a conspiracy against the Yogi Adityanath government by people with vested interests. The cyber cell has registered an FIR after investigations pointed towards a conspiracy to malign the Yogi government and provoke caste violence.

“Social media have been used to conspire and spread canards and we have proof of the involvement of outfits like the PFI and SDPI. Some mafia dons who are being targeted by the Yogi government are supporting this campaign with money,” said a government spokesman.

He said that “false reports of the victim being raped, her tongue being cut and other mutilations were a part of this conspiracy in which some verified accounts on social media were used”.
