NEW DELHI – The Indian National Congress ought to actively justify its role as the leader of the opposition INDIA bloc, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and the vice president of the National Conference Omar Abdullah has said. He emphasised that leadership within the alliance “has to be earned” and cannot be assumed by default due to the size or historical significance of the Congress.
In a recent statement, Abdullah acknowledged the Congress’ position as the largest opposition party in Parliament and its widespread presence across India. However, he pointed out that this does not automatically entitle it to a leadership role within the INDIA bloc. Abdullah suggested that other alliance members expect the Congress to take more proactive steps in fostering unity and addressing coalition challenges, media reports said on Saturday.
Omar Abdullah expressed concerns about the INDIA bloc’s lack of frequent and effective communication among its members. He criticised the alliance for holding sporadic meetings and failing to maintain consistent engagement outside of electoral contexts. According to him, this approach risks reducing the coalition to a temporary platform rather than a long-term political force.
The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister stressed the need for sustained interactions beyond the electoral cycle, noting that the alliance’s current approach appears sporadic and ineffective. “Our existence can’t just be about six months before Parliament elections… The last time we met was when the Lok Sabha results had just come out. There has been no formal or informal sort of work that has been done for the INDIA bloc,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying.
Abdullah also referred to instances of discomfort among alliance partners in various states, such as Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Jammu and Kashmir. He suggested that Congress needs to address these tensions and create a more inclusive strategy to prevent rifts that could weaken the coalition.
Reflecting on recent electoral performances, Abdullah urged Congress to critically analyse its strategies and ensure its actions benefit the alliance as a whole. He praised Sonia Gandhi for her stature and influence within the opposition but cautioned the Congress against relying solely on its legacy to maintain its leadership.
On the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah highlighted the need for the Congress to advocate for the restoration of statehood in Parliament. He clarified that while his party, the National Conference, has partnered with the Congress in the region, its participation in the government is limited due to legislative constraints. Abdullah called on the Congress to strengthen its efforts in addressing regional concerns to maintain credibility within the bloc.
Omar Abdullah’s remarks underscore the challenges facing the INDIA bloc as it seeks to present a united front against the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
