Chidambaram Slams Karnataka Home Minister’s ‘Bulldozer’ Remark

Date:

NEW DELHI — Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram expressed shock over Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara’s remarks suggesting that the houses of drug peddlers could be demolished using bulldozers. He said such statements undermine the rule of law and violate constitutional principles.

Parameshwara has said the state government is taking strict action against drug peddlers on a daily basis. He added that authorities are tracking offenders, acting against those who rent out houses to them, and are even considering “demolishing their houses.”

Clarifying the Congress party’s stand, he said the so-called “bulldozer justice,” reportedly practiced in Uttar Pradesh, is illegal, arbitrary, and unjust. He stressed that any action against criminal activity must strictly follow due legal process and warned against normalising extra-legal measures in the name of law enforcement, as reported by NDTV.

In a strongly worded social media post, Chidambaram said he was “alarmed” by the remarks.

“I hope the report is wrong. The Supreme Court has declared the law: demolishing homes without due process is illegal and will violate the rights of other family members to a shelter,” he wrote.

He further reminded that the Congress Party has consistently opposed “bulldozer justice” as practised in Uttar Pradesh.

“Let not a Congress-governed state like Karnataka go down the illegal path of UP,” he cautioned.

Parameshwara’s comments have now prompted questions about the government’s anti-drug strategy and opened space for both internal criticism and opposition attacks.
