Affected Muslim families are living under the open sky; AIUDF legislator Haji Aminul Islam accuses the government of deliberately targeting Muslims
NAGAON – A recent bulldozer operation in the Lutumari forest area of Assam’s Nagaon district has left numerous Muslim families homeless, forcing them to endure the biting winter without shelter, adequate food, or water. The operation, carried out earlier this week, saw the roofs of homes torn away and belongings destroyed, leaving residents in desperate conditions.
Senior AIUDF legislator Haji Aminul Islam, accompanied by supporters, visited the area to witness the aftermath firsthand. Speaking to reporters, he expressed grave concern over the plight of the affected families.
“The people whose houses were demolished are currently in very bad condition. They are forced to live under the open sky in the cold. Even those who come to help with food are chased away,” Aminul Islam said.
“If any family tries to spend the night in a tent, their tents are burned, and their belongings destroyed. This is unacceptable.”
He further alleged that the demolitions were targeted specifically at Muslim residents. “This action is one-sided and deliberately targeting Muslims. The people living here are in very bad conditions and are not even being given the opportunity to live like humans,” he said. “Initially, this area was declassified as forest land, but it was later declared forest land again, which is completely wrong.”
The MLA urged the Assam government to urgently investigate the documentation of the affected families. “All these people are Indian citizens and have every right to live in this country. Despite this, they are being deprived of basic amenities like shelter and food,” he said.
Aminul Islam also called for intervention from the President of India and human rights organisations. “These families should be provided relief immediately so that they can live a life with dignity,” he added.
Currently, the situation in Lutumari forest poses a significant humanitarian challenge for the government and local administration. Residents and local leaders are appealing for immediate action to prevent further suffering as winter conditions worsen.
