RIYADH — American actor Giancarlo Esposito, widely known for his role as Gus Fring in the acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, has converted to Islam during his time in Saudi Arabia.
The news was announced by Turki Al-Sheikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, who stated that the actor recited the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, while filming in the Kingdom. The announcement was reported by the Jeddah-based Saudi Gazette on Sunday.
The General Entertainment Authority, formed in 2016, is an independent government body in Saudi Arabia responsible for regulating and developing the country’s entertainment sector.
According to Turki Al-Sheikh, Esposito formally embraced Islam after spending time in Saudi Arabia and working closely with Muslim colleagues during the production of his latest project. Al-Sheikh said the actor recited the Shahada and later prayed with members of the production team at a mosque.
A viral video on social media reportedly shows Esposito praying alongside the crew, which quickly drew widespread attention.
Turki Al-Sheikh noted that Esposito’s decision followed a positive personal experience in the Kingdom. He said the actor valued the hospitality, community spirit, and warmth he experienced while working in Saudi Arabia.
The news has prompted strong reactions online, particularly among fans who have followed Esposito’s decades-long Hollywood career. However, it should be noted that Esposito himself has not yet issued an official personal statement confirming or commenting on the conversion.
Esposito is considered one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, recognised for his intense and memorable performances. He achieved global fame portraying Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul, a role that earned him multiple award nominations and critical acclaim. He is also well-known for his role in The Mandalorian and numerous major Hollywood films and television productions.
Esposito is currently in Saudi Arabia for the production of Seven Dogs, one of the Kingdom’s largest entertainment projects, as the country continues to expand its film and television industry. Saudi Arabia has been investing heavily in global entertainment under Vision 2030, drawing major international productions and Hollywood talent.
