A ruckus breaks out as the restaurant staff tries to explain their policy; police intervene to calm the situation
NADIA — A controversy over halal meat has erupted in West Bengal’s Nadia district after BJP workers staged a protest at a restaurant, alleging that customers were being served halal meat without clear information.
The incident took place at a popular restaurant near Bhat Jangla on the National Highway. According to local reports, BJP workers reached the Singer Mothers Hut restaurant while some customers were having dinner and questioned the staff about the type of meat being served.
The protesters first asked whether halal meat was available at the restaurant. After the staff confirmed that halal meat was served, they questioned whether jhatka meat was also available. When the staff replied that jhatka meat was not served, an argument reportedly broke out.
A restaurant employee said the staff tried to explain the restaurant’s policy but the protesters were not satisfied.
“They asked whether halal meat was available, and I told them yes, it is available. We tried to explain our policy, but they did not listen,” the employee said.
The BJP workers then staged a protest outside the restaurant for more than two hours. They alleged that Hindu customers were not being clearly informed that the meat served at the restaurant was halal.
The protesters demanded that restaurants clearly mention the type of meat available on their menus so customers can make an informed choice.
BJP worker Uday Rajnath said customers have the right to know what type of meat they are being served.
“Restaurants serving halal meat should clearly mention it. Those who prefer jhatka meat should also have that option,” he said.
The protesters also demanded that halal meat be listed as one option rather than being the only choice available.
Following information about the protest, personnel from Tuali Police Station under Krishnanagar area reached the restaurant. Officials spoke with both the protesters and the restaurant management and brought the situation under control.
Police said there was no report of violence or injuries during the protest. An investigation into the matter has been started.
The incident also led to discussion on social media, with people expressing diverse views on the issue.
Some users questioned the protest, arguing that customers who have concerns about halal meat can choose other restaurants, while others supported the demand for clearer information about food items.
The controversy comes amid wider debates in different parts of India over food choices, religious practices and consumer information. The restaurant has maintained that it follows its own food policy, while protesters continue to demand greater transparency regarding the type of meat being served.
