Hindu priest known for hate speeches makes lewd remarks about women politicians including those in BJP

NEW DELHI – Controversial Hindu priest Yati Narsinghanand who has until recently been a darling of Hindutva groups for his hate speeches against Muslims has suddenly fallen from grace after he made lewd remarks against women politicians including those in the Bharatiya Janata Party. He called them ‘rakhel’ (prostitutes) in a video clip that has surfaced on social media recently.

Several BJP leaders have demanded his arrest while a prominent woman activist has reminded them of similar statements of various BJP leaders which they have been making about women. Among the leaders named are Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“This is invaluable knowledge. All the women who were in politics used to be ‘rakhel’ of a politician. Or these politicians used to be daughter-sisters or daughter-in-law, wife…. then Samajwadi came to power. Under this government, women used to be prostitutes for only one politician. Then, the Mayawati government came. Under this government, these affairs of women were not being run. Under her government, no politician can provide tickets to any woman. They neither used to promise that they would recommend her name with Behan ji (Mayawati). He might have his own ticket”, says Narsinghanand in the video.

Talking about the BJP, Narsinghanand says “After that, there was a government of honest people. Then, the government contract of women has increased by 10 percent…all the women politicians who are in the BJP have gone to become politicians. If she goes to one and not to others, others will not do anything for her. If she has some work from some third politician, she has to go to him. This is the reality of honest and good people. This is politics. I enjoy seeing women politicians”.

These lewd remarks about women politicians drew condemnation from all around including Hindutva ecosystem. BJP politician Kapil Mishra, considered one of those who engineered last year’s Delhi riots, not only condemned Narsinghanand but also demanded his arrest. He says “thinking about women cannot be that of a Hindutva follower. This is reflective of his ‘Jihadi’ mindset”.

Mishra has been one his strong supporters. Many Twitterati have referred to this fact. They have pointed out that Mishra himself wholeheartedly supported Narsinghanand when he made anti-Muslim speeches. Mishra even ran a campaign to collect money for Narsinghanand.

Shefali Vaidya, a woman who believes in Hindutva ideology, expressed her shock over Narsinghanand’s comments and said she made a mistake by supporting him.

Many people have remembered her old tweet in which she called Narsinghanand “Youdha sanyasi” (Warrior Hermit). Now, she called him “Charlatan” and said she made mistake by supporting him.

BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga and BJP Spokesperson RP Singh demanded his arrest.

Prominent activist Kavita Kirshnan said that the language used by Narsinghanand was used by Mishra about activist Safoor Zargar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar.

Meanwhile, Narsinghanand has sought apology from women and claimed that his video was about corruption in politics which someone has “edited”.
