BJP Gets Humiliating Defeat in Gorakhpur, Phulpur Lok Sabha By-polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP had won both seats with a margin of more than 3 lakh votes.

LUCKNOW: BJP and its top leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah might have been able to convince voters of Tripura but not the people in Uttar Pradesh where they are in power for the last one year. In the first big by-poll after the March 2017 Assembly polls, which BJP had swept with emphatic win, the saffron party has got humiliating defeat both in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha constituencies.

The SP-BSP alliance won Gorakhpur, the seat held by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for 20 years, with over 21,000 votes. In Phulpur also, the seat got vacant after BJP’s Keshav Prasad Maurya became deputy CM, the BJP was defeated by SP with a huge margin of around 60,000 votes.

Bihar Voters Reject JDU-BJP Alliance

In Bihar also, JDU-BJP combine got humiliating defeat in the by-polls for one Lok Sabha and two Assembly seats. RJD of Lalu Prasad won the Araria Lok Sabha seat with a margin of around 62,000 votes, leaving BJP far behind. The RJD also won the Jehanabad Assembly seat. BJP won the Bhabua Assembly seat.

This was first by-poll in the state after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ditched the Grand Alliance of RJD and Congress and rejoined BJP-led NDA in July 2017 and formed new government. He had fought the 2015 Assembly polls as part of the Grand Alliance. After the massive victory, the alliance formed government and Nitish became CM and Lalu Prasad’s son Tejashwi Yadav Deputy CM.
