MADHUBANI — A disturbing case of police brutality has emerged from Bihar’s Madhubani district, where a local mosque imam, Maulana Feroz, who is also a Madrassa teacher, has accused the police of physically assaulting him inside the Beni Patti police station. A viral video shared by the YouTube channel ‘Hindustani Media’ has brought the incident to public attention, showing the imam detailing the abuse.
In the video, Maulana Feroz claims, “They brought me to the police station and locked me in a lockup. After fifteen to twenty minutes, the DSP arrived and beat me up badly. After that, he called a constable and told him, ‘Hit him as much as you want.’”
He further alleges that he was verbally abused for being a religious leader, saying, “They mocked me for being a Maulvi and told me to pray to Allah for protection. They said, ‘If you go to jail, you will understand. You will be beaten even in front of your father.’”
According to Feroz, he was subjected to further mistreatment, including being denied water when he asked for it. “They grabbed my beard while beating me. The pain still haunts me,” he states in the video. Reports indicate that due to the severity of his injuries, he was taken to Sadar Hospital but later referred to another facility for advanced treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among local residents in Madhubani and Darbhanga, with many condemning the alleged police misconduct.
Renowned poet and President of Maholi Foundation Bihar, Danish Kamal Sargam, criticised the lack of response from political and community leaders. “The opposition is completely silent on this matter. Even secular leaders, including Muslim representatives, have not raised their voices against this brutal act,” he stated.
Providing context to the incident, Sargam explained that Maulana Feroz was riding a motorcycle when he encountered a police checkpoint. Due to heavy fog, he reportedly did not stop immediately but halted shortly afterward. However, police officers allegedly reacted by hitting his vehicle with batons. When he objected to this treatment, he was beaten on the spot, then taken to the police station where further assault occurred.
Despite the serious allegations, local police officials have dismissed Maulana Feroz’s claims, insisting that no misconduct took place. However, the viral nature of the incident and public demands for accountability have intensified calls for an independent investigation.
Community members and activists have urged authorities to take immediate action and ensure justice for Maulana Feroz. “If these claims are true, it reflects a dangerous misuse of power and religious discrimination,” said a local resident, adding, “We need a fair and transparent inquiry to uncover the truth.”
