KOLKATA: That Mamata Banerjee remains invincible in West Bengal is evident from the results of the Sabang Assembly by-poll on Sunday. Gita Rani Bhunia of her Trinamool Congress has won the seat with a huge margin of over 64,000 votes.

The Sabang by-poll was being seen as a litmus test for erstwhile TMC leader Mukul Roy who had joined BJP in November this year. BJP has been projecting him as its face to counter Mamata. He was star campaigner in the area where polling was held on December 21. However, the candidate of the saffron party has finished at No. 3.

Rita Mondal of CP-M bagged second position with 41,987 votes.

The by-poll was held following the seat became vacant in the wake of sitting Congress legislator Manas Bhunia’s resignation as he joined the ruling TMC and was later elected to Rajya Sabha.
