LUCKNOW — Actor, activist and Congress spokesperson Sadaf Jafar and former IPS officer S R Darapuri, arrested during anti-CAA protests in the Uttar Pradesh capital last month, were released from jail on Tuesday.

Congress worker and social activist Sadaf Jafar alleged that not only did male police officers assault her in custody but the police also subjected her to communal slurs and humiliation and asked her to go to Pakistan.

“They said ‘you are a Pakistani’,” Ms. Jafar told The Hindu at her residence after being released from jail, more than two weeks after her arrest following the violence during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Lucknow.

“They said ‘khate yahan ke ho, bajate wahan ke ho. Kya kami ki hai humne tum logo ke liye. [You eat here but sing songs of Pakistan. What have we not provided to you people] You are doing jobs here, getting to eat and also produce kids’,” she narrated.

A local court gave them bail on Saturday but they could be released only three days later because some formalities could not be completed, sources said.

Congress city president Mukesh Singh Chauhan said that both walked out of jail at about 10 am. “I was there along with other office party office bearers to receive them. Our party is against the CAA and against police brutality meted out to the peaceful protestors,” PTI quoted Chauhan as saying.

Sadaf was arrested on Dec 19 and Darapuri the next day.

Soon after their release, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacked the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh and said “lies can never win.”
