NEW DELHI – The All India Milli Council (AIMC), a representative body of Indian Muslims, has issued a rallying cry to political parties, urging them to address escalating communal tensions and protect minority rights in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Emphasising the need to uphold the principles enshrined in the Constitution, the AIMC released a comprehensive charter of demands aimed at fostering unity and inclusivity in the nation.

Released simultaneously in New Delhi and state capitals on February 23, the charter underscores the imperative for political parties to prioritise justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, while combating the institutionalisation of violence and discrimination against marginalised communities, including Dalits and other vulnerable sections of society.

Formulated during an extraordinary meeting of the Political Affairs Committee of AIMC held in Mumbai on January 15 and 16, the charter reflects extensive consultations among participants. It has been disseminated through press conferences and presented to the leadership of secular political parties, with the expectation that it will be incorporated into their election manifestos.

The AIMC calls upon political entities to embrace a positive approach toward the nation’s second-largest religious community and marginalised groups, advocating for their equitable participation in the country’s development regardless of religion, caste, or gender.

As a longstanding advocate for national unity and democratic values, the AIMC has historically played a pivotal role in fostering inter-community dialogue and countering divisive forces. It remains committed to raising political and social awareness among Muslims and addressing the prevailing socio-political challenges.

Highlighting concerns over the erosion of democratic norms and the rise of communalism, the AIMC warns against the disenfranchisement of minorities and other marginalised segments of society. The charter addresses a wide array of issues, including the protection of minority rights, enforcement of anti-discrimination measures, and promotion of educational and employment opportunities for marginalised communities.

Key demands include the effective implementation of recommendations from the Sachar Committee and Justice Ranganath Misra Commission, establishment of an Equal Opportunity Commission, and proportional representation of minorities in government institutions. The charter also calls for the protection of Waqf properties and the repeal of discriminatory laws such as the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Addressing communal violence, the charter advocates for the enactment of comprehensive legislation and holds state administrations accountable for mob violence and lynching incidents. It further calls for the empowerment of minority commissions and the enactment of reservation laws to ensure equitable representation in education and public employment.

In addition to these priorities, the charter addresses a range of issues, including public health, cultural affairs, and the protection of minority languages. The AIMC urges the media to fulfill its journalistic responsibilities by amplifying these demands and encouraging political parties to embrace inclusivity in their election agendas.

As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, the AIMC’s charter serves as a clarion call for unity, justice, and social harmony, emphasising the imperative for political leaders to uphold the nation’s founding principles and safeguard the rights of all citizens.
