AFGHANISTAN ATTACK
Afghanistan’s National Army soldiers walk out of the Indian Consulate in Herat, Afghanistan, after a clash between insurgents and security forces on Friday that killed four militants.

NEW DELHI, May 23 – India Friday said the attack on its consulate in Herat in Afghanistan “stems from beyond” the Afghan borders.

“Our premises have been repeatedly attacked by those who do not support India’s development work in Afghanistan. The attack will not dilute India’s development assistance and its contribution to rehabilitation and reconstruction of Afghanistan,” external affairs ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said.

“All of us strongly condemn the attack in strongest possible terms. The attack stems from beyond Afghanistan borders,” he said at a press conference here.

Four heavily armed gunmen attacked the consulate in Herat early Friday.

The government was examining the reason and timing behind the attack on its consulate in Afghanistan, Akbaruddin said.

“We are assessing these events carefully and evaluating them, I won’t jump to conclusions,” he said. — IANS
