Actor Prakash Raj’s ‘Funny’ Take on Ramayana Triggers Legal Action

Date:

The versatile actor is accused of hurting religious sentiments

NEW DELHI — Actor-turned-social activist Prakash Raj has sparked a controversy after his remarks on the sacred Hindu book Ramayana went viral. A complaint has been filed, with many accusing him of hurting religious sentiments, while the debate continues online.

Raj’s comments on the Ramayana came at the Kerala Literature Festival. Known for powerful performances and outspoken views, the versatile actor has landed in an unwarranted controversy.

During his speech, Prakash Raj shared a satirical and modern version of the Ramayana. In his narration, he described the conflict between Lord Ram and Ravana in a simplified and humorous way, suggesting it began over an issue related to “stolen fruits” and even adding references like GST.

While he likely intended it as a joke or commentary, many people felt that this version distorted a sacred story and was disrespectful to religious beliefs.

As the video spread online, outrage grew quickly. Several people accused the actor of hurting religious sentiments. Reports suggest that a criminal complaint has been filed against him, demanding strict legal action.

The situation escalated as many social media users criticised him and called his remarks offensive. Some even demanded that action be taken against him for allegedly insulting the Ramayana.

Raj characterised Lord Ram and Lakshmana as “migrant workers” from North India who travelled to the South. He claimed the conflict began because Lord Ram and Lakshmana entered a field in the South—belonging to Ravana, whom he described as a South Indian tribal—and took fruits without paying.

Raj reportedly added humorous and sarcastic modern references, such as a dispute over a ₹2000 GST bill leading to the war.

The actor has faced intense criticism online, with many users demanding that filmmakers reconsider casting him in upcoming projects.

This incident is part of a broader series of recent controversies involving the actor, including his criticism of national leadership and remarks on communal narratives.
