HYDERABAD — Slow learners are generally treated with disdain. Not only parents and teachers but peers too look at them as a liability. The treatment meted out to them often proves detrimental to their progress. Here is a lesson why we should encourage those who are slow at studies.

A student Class VII, whose performance in academics was moderate till Class VII, gradually picked up pace of learning and fared well in higher education.

Sirisetti Sankeerth got 330th rank in the civil services examination of which results were declared on Tuesday. His story amply proved that a poor learner can excel in studies if he/she gets encouragement.

Son of an electrician with the exploration department of Singareni Collieries Company Limited’s (SCCL), Sirisetti is all set to become an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer. He cracked his UPSC examination in his fifth attempt with a determination to realise his civil service dream.

Satyanarayana, his father, was quoted by Telangana Today as saying, “Sankeerth was ‘an average’ performing student till upper primary schooling. He, however, bettered his show in later phases of education with the help of teachers. He pursued civil engineering at the College of Engineering, Osmania University Hyderabad after excelling in EAMCET. He appeared the examination of UPSC five times and finally realised his dream.”

The electrician, associated with the exploration department of Singareni Collieries Company Limited’s (SCCL), gives credit for his son’s achievement to teachers of Mother’s Convent High School of Bellampalli. He said Sirisetti benefited from the guidance and quality education offered to him by them.

Conveying his gratitude to his son’s teachers, he said, “I always thank them for motivating Sankeerth and laying focus on him.” According to his father, the ranker spent 16 hours a day in preparation of the examination as was determined to become an IAS officer.

On being asked how he feels as father of the civil service ranker, Satyanaryana he was elated. “It’s a proud moment for our family and the miner community. The coal belt comparatively produces few civil servants. My son brought recognition to us, town and the district by shining in the toughest national-level test,” he remarked.

Sankeerth is currently working as an assistant executive engineer with Mission Bhageeratha scheme in Adilabad district. He said his choice of anthropology as his optional subject helped him a lot.

He is confident that with the rank he would be offered IAS cadre. He thanked his teachers, parents and faculty of his coaching centre.
